Welcome to Sean Convy.com,
I am a self taught designer from Victoria BC originally, now I live here on Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. Having come out of the telecom’s industry with Nortel Networks, as a project manager back in 2002, I looked around for a career change, I started looking at websites and thought that ‘I could do that’ , so I downloaded my first site and started the process of ripping it apart, and the rest as they say ‘is history’.
I have been designing sites for approximately 9 years now and have moved from looking at all of the fancy bells and whistles to going back to basics and creating sites that are easy to read and navigate around. With an occasional smattering of flash I like to keep my designs simple and concentrate more on fast and easy to load pages rather than overloading them with unnecessary fancy graphics and flash images.
With the onset of blog programs such as WordPress and Drupal as well as the free blog pages such as blogger etc., we are adopting a cleaner approach to sites and are now deploying WordPress as stand alone sites for people who have lots of content, and lots of change to their sites. This serves several purposes, it allows the owner of the site the opportunity to get involved in a more interactive way with their site, I have spoken to many of my clients who state that they know ‘zero’ about websites and are literally ‘petrified’ to go anywhere near the pages and the coding.
With the use of easy access pages via the control panel, these fears are now a thing of the past. The other benefit of using platforms such as WordPress is a basic obvious function and that is the pre-built database that comes with the software. This can be a real time saver and money saver when it comes to being able to control content for archiving or for interactive ‘blogging-style’ pages. With many companies charging well in advance of $100+ per hour for database work, it seems bizarre that people would pay for that kind of work, added to the designers hourly rate to create a site. I have suggested to a number of clients recently that they would be better advised purchasing a theme template that like the look of, and then we can perform re-designs and css changes that can tailor the site to the individual need.
Designs and Logo’s
I was approached to create a site for a business that had zero identity, a start off business that needed to get its name out there quickly to attract business and new clients, having decided on a design for the site, we then took on the logo and company identity. I designed the corporate logo and then the company artwork for letterhead and business cards etc. This was not something that had been planned, it just appeared to happen and then get noticed! So I have since designed a number of business cards, letterheads, menus, logos and conference posters and banners.
As I mentioned at the start of this page, I am self taught, however that does not hold me back from creating unique ‘one-off’ designs that I will never replicate. I have broken the wordpress platform apart trying to create templates that are unique to each site, and have added many features to standard ‘off the shelf’ designs. There are still lots of things that I need to learn and I will never take on a project that is out of my ‘I can do that zone’
So if you are looking for a cost effective way to get your site or business identity off the ground, give me a shout … hey I promise you the best price and deliver quickly and offer constant support to all of my clients.
